Motivation

There is an emerging consensus that we should strive to develop a single community-wide and interdisciplinary response to the first solicitation from the NSF for site independent proposals for the "Deep Underground Science and Engineering Program Planning and Technical Requirements " (available online here) In this context, and in support of the organization of such a community wide response (previous messages), the UC Institute for Nuclear and Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology is organizing a site independent workshop on the Science and Engineering opportunities of a Deep Underground Laboratory (or set of laboratories). It will take place in Berkeley from Wednesday morning 11 August 2004 to Saturday 14 August around noon. The purpose of the workshop is to:

The scientific program, which will cover the underground aspects of nuclear and particle physics, astrophysics, biology, geology, engineering and homeland security, is under development with the PI team and the "site consultation group" being put together for this solicitation. We envision a mix of plenary talks summarizing the work accomplished so far and working groups focusing on open questions. We will also review how the education and outreach component can be integrated into the overall underground program.

Accommodation and Registration

The workshop will take place at the Berkeley Marina/Doubletree hotel:
200 Marina Boulevard
Berkeley, CA 94710
Tel: 1-510-548 7920
Fax: 1-510-548 7944
www.berkeleymarina.doubletree.com
Reservation Code : DUS

The participants are expected to make their reservations directly with the hotel. Please refer to the three letter code "DUS" when making your reservation. The special rate for the "Deep Underground Science" event is guaranteed at $119/night if booked before 15 July 2004. The rate would apply from Tuesday night August 10 through the following weekend for conference participants who wish to stay longer.

Please also register with us online here.

Because this event occurs before NSF funding, we have to charge a registration fee of $275 for the 3 and a half days. In addition to the meeting rooms and refreshments this will include 4 breakfasts and 3 lunches and a festive dinner Friday night (because of UC regulations, we will have a no host bar at the dinner). Registration for one day is fixed at $120. Please pay the registration fee ASAP by check made out to "Regents of the University of California" sent to Mary MacCready at the address given below. Participants from the University of California system can pay this fee by Intercampus Fund Transfer. They should contact Caryl Esteves at (510) 642-9190 or caryl@cosmology.berkeley.edu to arrange the transfer.

Additional guest tickets for the Friday night banquet are available at $45 each and should be paid for together with the registration fee.

Through support provided by the University of California and possibly from National Laboratories, we hope to be able to provide financial aid to a few participants from fields with limited funding (e.g. Education).

Graduate students from any institution may serve as scientific secretaries during the meeting and have their registration fee waived. They should register ASAP by contacting Al Lu at allu@cosmology.berkeley.edu
